Syttende Mai
Syttende Mai, or the 17th of May, is cause for celebration among the people of Norway. On this day in 1814, leaders of the country signed its constitution, and Norway officially claimed its independence. Also known as Nasjonaldagen (“The National Day”) or Grunnlovsdagen (“The Constitution Day”), the holiday has been celebrated annually ever since. Over time, what started as groups of small, spontaneous festivities amongst students evolved into extensive community-wide parades and gatherings. The day has its own set of rituals and practices that are beloved by Norwegians all over the world.
