Skimboarding

Today might just be the day for “the perfect wave.” If you are a skimboarder, then every day has that potential.

Skimming is similar to surfing

Skimboarding is like surfing in that you balance on a board using waves for performance thrills, but that’s about the extent of similarities. Skimboards are smaller and rounder than a surfboard. When surfing, the waves give you momentum toward the shoreline. When skimboarding, you build momentum by gliding across breaking waves along the shoreline.

There are two types of skimboarding, and Seabrook has venues for both: the ocean year-round (for wave skimboarding), and an inland pool during summertime (for flatland skimboarding).

Everything you need

Everything you need to begin (or practice your tricks) skimming is available at Basecamp, even lessons. Lesson packages include skimboard (for size and skill level), wetsuit or neoprene pants, booties, gloves, and a hydrating drink.

If you think you might be interested, here are two short, introduction YouTube videos from two world champion skimboarders:

You’re going to run at a speed in which you want to fall.” – Blair Conklin, 3x World Champion Skimboarder

Be safe and catch that perfect wave!

Scores are based on completion, difficulty, size of the wave, length of ride, variety of maneuvers, and style and control  – otherwise known as: “The skimboarder who completes the most radical, controlled maneuvers in the most critical section of the biggest or best wave for the longest functional distance, shall be deemed the winner.”
  • If a skimboarder fails to complete a maneuver, with the slightest of incompletion, then they receive a score of no more than 5 − even for the gnarliest attempts.

Whale Watching

Gray whales, Blue whales, Sperm whales, Orcas, and Humpbacks all live along the Pacific coast. Migration of the Gray whale happens each year – twice!  These spectacular creatures travel in small pods north to their feeding grounds of Alaska then return south to the warm breeding lagoons of Baja California, Mexico. During their journey of over 5,000 miles, Gray whales can be spotted about a mile off Seabrook’s beach and other Washington coast beaches.

Here Are Some of the Basics for Whale Watching

The Gray whale can be up to 50 feet in length and weigh 80,000 pounds, which makes them easy to spot from the shoreline, an oceanside Seabrook rental home, or a Seabrook townhome in the town center (with binoculars, spotting scope, or telescope if necessary). You may first notice spray because Gray whales spout a jet of vapor when they surface. This misty spray can fountain up to 12 feet in the air. It looks like water, but it is really compressed air expelled from the whale’s lungs.

There are also many public beaches and state parks via SR 109 to watch for whales from Copalis Beach to Pacific Beach State Park up to Destruction Island Viewpoint (about a mile south of Ruby Beach, which is 68 miles from Seabrook). The Whale Trail is a great resource for whale watching along the Pacific coast.

Whale watching is just one of many wildlife outings you can experience in the Olympic National Park.

If you’re interested in culture, history, and whale exhibits, check out the Westport Maritime Museum in Westport just 50 miles from Seabrook. Also, Ocean Sportsfishing Charters in Westport offers whale watching tours, plus all types of fishing charters.

Before watching for whales from the shoreline, check the tide tables at Tides and Currents NOAA, Point Grenville, WA.

The best time to watch whales on the Washington coast is the beginning of March through May during their migration north to the feeding waters of Alaska, the Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea.

  • At 13 to 20 feet, Beluga whales are one of the smallest species of whales, and there are more than 80 whale species.
  • Unlike Gray whales who swim in small groups (pods), Blue whales travel alone or in pairs.
  • Blue whales are one of the loudest animals on earth and can hear each other up to 1,000 miles away.
  • Gray whales live between 50 and 70 years.
  • A baby Gray whale can consume as much as 80 gallons of milk per day.
  • Early ancestors of the Gray whale existed over 30 million years ago.
  • It is estimated that there are now over 22,000 Gray whales! In the early 1900’s, they were considered close to extinction.
  • Today, Gray whales are protected by international law, and their numbers have grown. In 1994, the Gray whale was removed from the United States endangered species list.
  • Whale watching is so big in South Africa that the town of Hermanus has a designated “whale crier” to blow a horn that alerts people whenever a whale is spotted.

Beach Day With Your Pup

In Seabrook, we have seen many dogs experience their unforgettable first time at the beach! From jumping in the surf to sprinting up and down the shoreline to play fetch with a piece of treasured driftwood they found, the beach is a dog’s paradise.

What To Bring

Your dog may love splashing around in the ocean or along the freshwater outlets, but it’s a good idea to bring along plenty of fresh water and a dish for them to use, along with plenty of dog towels for cleanup after beach play. Depending on your dog’s eating regimen, some snacks or food will be appreciated by your pup! And of course, don’t forget to bring along some bags to clean up after your pet.

Their Favorite Toy For Fetch

Something about the beach brings out the playful side in all of us and especially in our four-legged friends. Bring along their favorite Frisbee or ball for hours of beach time exercise and fun.

No Leash Required

Though leashes are required throughout the town center and neighborhoods in Seabrook, once dogs hit the beach they can dart, prance, waddle, glide, sniff, and burrow free range – while obeying the human, of course.

Rinse Off The Sand

Some dog breeds have extra sensitive skin and the fine sand granules might cause irritation if the sand sits too long in their fur. If this might be your dog, you can rinse off your dog at The Salty Dog (and pick up some special treats, too!) or use what is provided at your vacation rental home. Please see The Salty Dog’s website for pricing on dog wash use.

Pay Attention To The Weather

During the summer months, always make sure to feel the dry sand to see if it’s a suitable temperature for sensitive paws. Seek out shade for your dog on exceptionally warm days and make sure they have had plenty of water.

We can’t wait to see your dog running free on the beach!

Storm Watching

It’s funny how a good storm can stir up feelings of excitement and new beginnings.

With no land masses between the Washington coast and Japan, storm fronts rolling in from the west have 3,000 miles of open ocean to build into spectacular events.

That’s why storm watching is one of the most exhilarating and rewarding winter activities to enjoy while at Seabrook. Typically, the best time to enjoy winter storms is from December through March – and boy does Mother Nature deliver quite a show!

THE PERFECT SETTING

The unique geography of the Seabrook coastline provides many oceanfront homes with some of the best storm watching panoramas on the coast. Some of which can be enjoyed right from the comfort of your living room sofa while sipping on freshly brewed coffee in front of a cozy fireplace.

Open a window and fall into a state of relaxation with the rhythmic sounds of the rain combined with the lapping of ocean waves in the distance providing the perfect background for a quick nap or to get lost in your favorite book.

RECONNECT WITH NATURE

Because it’s rainy and windy, you feel good about taking a break from your to-do list and taking time to reconnect with nature.

Take a deep breath of ocean air or enjoy the rain in your home’s private hot tub. Surrender to nature and feel the unique combination of the cool rain falling on your skin with the warmth of the jetted tub.

Storm watching offers you a glimpse and appreciation for the power of mother nature. Putting life into perspective on many levels.

The energy of a storm can make you feel a sense of optimism for a fresh start after the storm passes.

Storm Watching In Seabrook

QUICK TIPS FOR STORM WATCHING AT THE BEACH

Experiencing coastal storms firsthand is an exhilarating and unique experience. If you plan on going outside to enjoy the view, make sure to dress for the weather, wearing an insulated raincoat (with pockets to safely store your phone or other devices) and rainboots. Seabrook has breathtaking vantage points along the bluff to take in the sprawling coastline. The Pacific Glen promenade, Overlook Park, Northwest Glen archway, and West Hill Park are just a few spots to check out the waves.

Pay attention to signage posted, there will be red flags noting dangerous conditions on the beach when it not safe to enter. If you are on the beach to storm watch under safe conditions, make sure to always face the ocean, do not go in or near the water (sneaker waves are possible along all coastlines), and do not go near driftwood or other items that can potentially be moved.

RELAX AND STORM WATCH IN SEABROOK

Whether you decide to hunker down in your oceanfront home or bundle up and join the seabirds to dance in the wind, you’re sure to enjoy an awe-inspiring experience that invigorates your mind, body and soul while storm watching at Seabrook.

Beachcombing At Seabrook

Beachcombing is a fun year-round activity at Seabrook and at nearby beaches, often with exceptionally great finds during the fall and winter months.

Many avid beachcombers find peace and comfort in this outdoor activity for a lot of reasons.

Beachcombing is an active hobby that involves searching beaches for shells, sea glass, rocks, fossils, and other collectables that wash ashore. For many, it’s fun to get outside, explore new beaches, and reconnect with nature; to which beachcombing checks all the boxes.

If you think beachcombing sounds fun, and you want to give it a try on your next stay at Seabrook, here are some general guidelines and ideas to make the most of your outing!

TREASURES ARE PLENTIFUL

Though beachcombing is fun any time of the year, many agree that the colder months are the best time to go scouring the beaches for treasures.

Why?

The heavier waves the coast gets during the colder months stir up the surf and drops a fortune of unique treasures on to the beach. The best time to go beachcombing is after a storm when the tides are low so the beach is exposed and you can find more treasures.

This authentic glass float was found right on Seabrook’s beach!

Authentic Glass Float On Seabrook's Beach

WHAT TO BRING

Just because it’s the beach does not mean there will be any shortage of sharp surfaces and potentially harmful objects. Make sure you bring shoes with grip to ensure you’ll keep your footing and won’t hurt yourself. You’re also going to want to bring layers of clothes – several long-sleeved shirts, extra pairs of long pants, lots of socks, gloves, scarf, all-weather shoes, and warm hat.

In addition, you’re going to want to be have everything you’ll need on your excursion, such as a tote bag for your treasures and gardening gloves for raking through shell. Finally, while you’re searching for treasures you’re most likely to come upon some trash. Please bring a plastic bag along to pick up trash and help preserve our planet’s beaches. If you simply pick up whatever garbage you find, you’ll be leaving the beach more beautiful and safe then it was when you got there.

RULES TO REMEMBER

#1 – Be respectful of marine life. Do not kill or take any live animals, including starfish, crabs, fish, etc. But, if it’s already dead than go ahead.

#2 – If you are going to take something, make sure the object isn’t somebody’s home. You’d be surprised at what little crabs like to make their houses out of.

#3 – Use Caution! Be aware of the weather, tide schedules, slippery surfaces, wildlife, etc.

BEACHCOMBING AT SEABROOK

In Seabrook, you have miles of sand to search for special treasures along your path.

You never know what you’ll find washed ashore on the Seabrook coastline. Whether mesmerizing sea glass, petrified wood, or even a funny-looking sea creature, each find will be sure to have your mind wandering as you think about the long path it travelled to arrive there.

Beachcombing is a great way to unwind, clear your head, reconnect with the earth, and explore nature.

COPALIS BEACH
Copalis Beach is right below Seabrook

Known as “Washington’s Best Kept Secret,” Pacific Beach is home to Copalis Beach (and Seabrook), which is the country’s only FAA-designated beach airport. However, Copalis Beach is better known for its long stretches of sandy beaches, making it a great beachcombing destination. If you’re looking for the famed Japanese glass floats, this area is going to be your best bet.

WHERE ELSE TO GO BEACHCOMBING

There are countless spots along the Washington coast to go beachcombing, but some of the best spots are right here in Seabrook’s back yard.

RIALTO BEACH
Rialto Beach on the Washington Coast

Rialto Beach is famous for both its offshore sea stacks and phenomenal beach combing. The beach is covered with rock beds of gray basalt and diverse quartz and jasper collections, like orbicular jasper, which stands out with its red orbs on a black background.

KALALOCH BEACH
Kalaloch Beach on the Washington Coast

Kalaloch Beach is acclaimed for its lodge, sunset and storm watching, and the famed Kalaloch Tree Root Cave. But it’s also a great spot for driftwood. There are countless artful, weatherworn pieces scattered across the gorgeous stretch of sand. While you’re here, you can also look through the tide pools filled with all kinds of marine life.

Surf Bigger Waves

Cold, Wet, Stoked!

While the sport of surfing is most often associated with Hawaii or Southern California, cold-weather surfing is growing in popularity along the Washington Coast.

Winter surfing in the Pacific Ocean

Cold-weather surfing is gaining popularity

Surfing in the Pacific Ocean in the middle of winter might sound like a crazy idea, but if you seek adventure and jump at the opportunity to try new things, then squeeze into your wetsuit and wax your surf boards because it’s time to catch some waves!

Seabrook is the perfect home base as you seek out various breaks along the Washington Coast.

WHERE TO GO

Seabrook’s Beach

Seabrook’s beach is the best beach for those first starting out surfing! It’s a featureless beach break without any obstacles to run into, along with a sand spit that extends several dozen yards out into the surf, making it easy to stand-up and re-center if conditions are less than ideal while learning.

The best conditions to surf during the colder months tend to be in the early mornings with calmer conditions, says Buck Giles, owner of Buck’s Northwest in Seabrook (please note Buck’s Northwest is now closed).

For more seasoned surfers, going farther out beyond the wave breaks is sometimes necessary to get the most desired waves.

Surfing up and down the coast near Seabrook is notorious for wildlife sightings, too! From all kinds of birds to harbor seals, crab, and even black dolphins on occasion.

Experience All Kinds Of Land & Water Wildlife While Surfing

Nearby Surf Spots

During a typical winter, relentless storms pound the Washington Coast with huge swells, torrential rains, and cross-winds causing many a Washington surfer to seek solace in the wind shadow of the Olympic Mountains and the shoreline bluffs.

On the coast, there are a few sheltered wind spots, and one of them is the closest thing in Washington State to “Surf City.” Westport, a harbor town that guards the south entrance to Grays Harbor, is considered Washington’s surfing capital. Here, in the shelter of the jetty entrance, surfers are able to enjoy clean swells manicured by S winds that whip the place into offshore perfection.

On the Northside of Grays Harbor inlet is the seaside town of Ocean Shores. The jetty at the north entrance of Grays harbor creates a rare S wind block and provides a nice wind shadow for surfers to enjoy some spray.

The true hidden treasure of the Washington Coast is Point Grenville, located 7-miles north of Seabrook. Back in the 1960s, Grenville was Washington’s version of Malibu. Point Grenville is on the Quinault Indian Nation reservation and is not currently open. An anomaly on the otherwise pointless coast, Point Grenville interrupts the relentless NW winds and creates an eddy of atmospheric tranquility.

WHAT TO WEAR

The cold water turns out to be a non-issue thanks to wet suit technology. Just make sure you have the essentials.

A Good Hooded Wetsuit

A hooded wet suit is the foundation of your winter surfing gear. Something in the 5/4 thickness should do you well.

Booties

You want a round toe boot to keep all your toes together, which keeps them warmer longer.

Gloves/Mittens

Gloves are great for water temps in the low 50s and upper 40s. Once things start creeping lower than that you want some mittens, for the exact reasons you want round toe boots.

MAKE SEABROOK YOUR HOME BASE

The uniqueness of winter surfing, remote beaches, a patchwork of reservations and private land, and hidden gems make cold-water surfing in the Pacific Northwest an experience like no other. In fact, many surfers like the cool weather and water because it means fewer crowds.

As the surfers say “if this were a little warmer, it’d be Malibu.”

Make Seabrook your surf-seeking home base as you travel along the Washington Coast to places like Point Grenville and Westport.

Mushroom Foraging In Seabrook

Wild mushrooms are on the menu! Have you ever wanted to hunt for mushrooms but didn’t know where to start?

Seabrook has partnered with Michael, Pacific Northwest foraging pro and founder of Wild Spores & More, to offer guided mushroom foraging in and around Seabrook this Fall with his friend and fellow guide, Dan, owner of Conscious Collectors Cooperative. Some people may remember seeing Michael as a merchant at the Seabrook Saturday Markets, too.

Meet Your Mushroom Guides

Michael has been on the hunt for mushrooms throughout the Pacific Northwest since 2012. With Michael as your field guide, you’ll receive a fun and educational orientation on mushroom foraging before venturing through the beautiful forests of Seabrook in search of a variety of mushrooms. Hello, golden-brown chanterelles!

Michael - Mushroom Foraging Guide

For Michael, mushroom foraging first started out as a hobby and grew into the full-time business where he delivers only the best products to restaurants from Seattle all the way to Portland. He enjoys sharing his passion with others and can’t wait to show you everything there is to know about gathering mushrooms and even tips with what to do with them afterwards!

Dan - Mushroom Foraging Guide

Dan grew up in the Puget Sound and has been an avid outdoorsmen throughout his life. After a few serious skateboarding injuries, he transitioned his hobby into the less risky activity of mushroom foraging, along with gaining interest in other plants, trees, and other forest ecology.

Almost a decade later into his journey of exploring fungi and forestry, Dan enjoys sharing and inspiring others with what he has learned. Check out more of Dan’s insight into the world of fungi on his Instagram.

Build A Gnome House

Welcome the coastal woodland gnomes and fairies with a brand new house built of all-natural materials found throughout Seabrook’s forests and along the beach! This all-ages activity invites guests, homeowners, and visitors to get creative and use their building skills to add to the ever-growing gnome village on the Gnome Trail in Seabrook.

Getting Started

Building a gnome house is the perfect sunny or rainy day activity, just make sure to bring along some rain boots and jacket to collect your house-building materials from the woods if it happens to be raining. So, what materials should you use? Some gnome-approved materials include twigs, pine cones, seashells, dune grass, driftwood, pine needles, feathers, stones, ferns, bark, and leaves. These are all plentiful throughout Seabrook’s trails and the beach. Hunting for materials is a great way to get to know the many trails around town, too! You can use just your hands to assemble homes or if you want to get fancy, doing some whittle work can take a gnome house to the next level.

Add Your Own Creations To The Magical Gnome Trail In Seabrook!

Make Your Creation At Your Vacation Home

There’s nothing quite so whimsical as coming across a cute little handcrafted gnome house along the Gnome Trail. Stand-alone gnome houses take some technical skill where it is best to build it on a foundation for easy transport to the forest. Many of the homes in Seabrook have decks that work well for a makeshift workshop! In the woods you can find sturdier, thicker twigs or branches to use and also bendable branches or dune grass (we recommend gloves while handling dune grass) that can be used to tie corners together as you build the home. Let your imagination run free with what you can add to the home, from windows, balconies, decks, multiple doorways, and more.

Collect Materials And Build While On The Trail

The easiest way to build a gnome home is to do it against something that is already there while enjoying the fresh air and natural surroundings. Provide your creation with a solid backing against fallen logs, stumps, tree bases or hollows for the perfect setup. On the Gnome Trail, you’ll see all shapes and sizes of gnome houses and forts that have been assembled over the years using the trees and stumps, from slanted homes to tall homes big enough for a human visitor or two!

Don’t Forget About The Little Details

Who doesn’t like a home that comes with all the best amenities? Assembling a little fireplace, bed, table, chair, a mailbox, pathway, or even stairs can make a house as cozy as can be.

Pick A Park And Stargaze In Seabrook

Or of course the beach is just a short walk away from anywhere in Seabrook, just pick your favorite walk-on beach access.

What To Bring

Make sure to bring plenty of layers along for your stargazing outing. The refreshing, yet undeniably cool beach breezes call for a warm coat or even a cozy blanket to wrap up in. Bring along a lantern, flashlight, or other light source if you plan to walk to the beach or from the beach after sunset. If you have any red paper, try putting that over your light source to help your vision stay adjusted to nighttime!

Check The Tides

Always check the tide tables before venturing to the beach to make sure it is safe. If you are a guest, there is a tide table chart within your amenity bag or you can visit a tide tables website. There are also surf warning flags posted by the beach accesses that will signify if conditions are not safe to be on the beach.

What To Look For

Aside from the thrill that comes with each shooting star in the night sky, spotting constellations like the Big Dipper, planets, and satellites passing by is fun, too. To see the timeframe when planets will be visible, take a look at Time And Date’s Astronomy Calendar.

Whether you are cozy on one of the porches or decks or have wandered into one of Seabrook’s parks or ventured to the beach, you won’t want to miss stargazing along the Washington Coast. We also recommend bringing a thermos of apple cider or hot chocolate to enjoy throughout the evening, too!
